So, they think that they have it right? #1 and #2 are set to play each other. But are they? Who's to say that #1 Florida with a lost to Old Miss is any better than #8 Penn State to a loss with Iowa? And Texas with it's only loss to #7 Texas Tech is left out of the picture? Oh that's because they didn't play in the conference championship game that had Baylor beat Texas Tech they would have gone to play Missouri and in that case we would have had our annual Stoops wine fest. When will they get it? THIS DOESN'T WORK! It's the college football sports writers full employment act. Aim to ESPN.com or any other sports site and you will see thousands of postings of why this is the best thing ever. So we can hear them talk to each other. That's it. Every year one team gets screwed or two teams. And every year the pundits say - "well I guess it works!". Are you kidding me?
It's funny too because basic economics would tell you that there is a ton more money to be made with a playoff system. Look at March Madness. The model of efficiency in sports. Whether it's a team playoff (which would be acceptable to most people because they aren't typically more than 4 teams that have a legitimate beef to get to the title game) or an 8 team playoff (with 6 conference champs and 2 at large bids). It's time has come. To end the best game in all of America through 12 weeks with a round of computer, sportswriters and coaches mental masturbation is just plain wrong.
I received the following email from my cousin this morning. While I don't want to be insensitive to the losses occurring in World War II at all, I think it makes the point very well.
BCS DECLARES GERMANY WINNER OF WORLD WAR II
US Ranked 4th
After determining the Big-12 championship game participants the BCS computers were put to work on other major contests and today the BCS declared Germany to be the winner of World War II.
"Germany put together an incredible number of victories beginning with the annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland and continuing on into conference play with defeats of Poland, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands. Their only losses came against the US and Russia; however considering their entire body of work--including an incredibly tough Strength of Schedule--our computers deemed them worthy of the #1 ranking."
Questioned about the #4 ranking of the United States the BCS commissioner stated "The US only had two major victories--Japan and Germany. The computer models, unlike humans, aren't influenced by head-to-head contests--they consider each contest to be only a single, equally-weighted event."
German Chancellor Adolph Hitler said "Yes, we lost to the US; but we defeated #2 ranked France in only 6 weeks." Herr Hitler has been criticized for seeking dramatic victories to earn 'style points' to enhance Germany's rankings. Hitler protested "Our contest with Poland was in doubt until the final day and the conditions in Norway were incredibly challenging and demanded the application of additional forces."
The French ranking has also come under scrutiny. The BCS commented "France had a single loss against Germany and following a preseason #1 ranking they only fell to #2."
Japan was ranked #3 with victories including Manchuria, Borneo and the Philippines.
